We often receive inquiries regarding
the history of our office building. Most long time Ellis County
residents refer to our office as the "Old Jail." The building is a
Texas historical landmark, and was completed in 1888. Ellis County
constructed the building to serve as the county's third jail
building. To view the Texas Historical Commission plaque for our

The
building is unique in that it utilized a "squirrel cage" revolving
cell system to house prisoners during its years of service as the
Ellis County jail. The squirrel cage was a pie shaped, multi-level
mechanism that rotated a series of jail cells past a single
doorway. To learn more about the squirrel cage mechanism, please
visit the website of the
Historical Society of Pottawatttamie County, Iowa, which is
the location of another surviving squirrel cage jail.
